TSHWANE NORTH COLLEGE MAKES A DIFFERENCE, SERVES THE COMMUNITY AND LEAVES A LEGACY!

BUILD A HOUSE PROJECT 2013

Tshwane North College for FET in partnership with the City of Tshwane is currently involved in a project to build a four bedroom house for a destitute family (as identified by the City of Tshwane Department of Health and Social Development) in Block L Soshanguve.

The main aim of the project (apart from Community Social Responsibility) is to afford students and lecturers in the following study fields, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, the opportunity to gain practical experience.

Roles and responsibilities

City of Tshwane

The City of Tshwane is represented by the Executive Mayor’s Office, Housing as well as the Health and Social Development Departments.  The Department of City Planning and Building assisted with the approval of the house plans as well as the inspection and approval of the phase 1 and phase 2 foundations and will assist with the final approval of the house.

Tshwane North College 

A Tshwane North College lecturer, Mr Sefara, draughted the house plan.  Tshwane North College appointed a Quantity Surveyor, that did the bill of quantities and that provides technical support.  TNC obtained the services of a registered builder, to assist the students to build the foundation and appointed a Structural Engineer that assisted with the issuing of foundation and roof completion certificates as well as the necessary inspection and liaison with regulatory bodies as required by the local authority. A technical team was also appointed.

Tshwane North College also facilitated the NHBRC registration.

The house was mainly built by obtaining sponsorships and donations. The Marketing Department of the College steered the project and obtained sponsors in cooperation with the office of the Executive Mayor.
